Track season is officially underway as Holyoke High School competed at the Brush Invitational Saturday, March 16.

Holyoke girls scored 23 points in the meet to grab a ninth placing out of 14 teams The boys scored 28 points for a 10th-place finish. Platte Valley nabbed the top spot in both divisions.

“I think we performed really well,” coach Luke Thomas stated. “It was a perfect meet to get the season started.”

Thomas praised the meet for including schools of ranging size and for keeping the meet relatively small. He noted that it was the perfect meet to get the athletes in tune with what will be expected of them throughout the season.

The meet also provided the HHS coaching staff with the opportunity to experiment with relay teams, try kids in different events and get an overall feel on the team.

Being the first meet of the season, Thomas mentioned that he would still like to see the intensity of the team pick up but was pleased with their performance.

Thomas plans to spend some time with the kids throughout the week to help them with their preparation before meets. He noted that the cold weather affected the kids at the Brush meet and being properly prepared and stretched before competing will help avoid injuries and slow starts.
