Landowners invited to pheasant brood production workshop PDF Print E-mail

“Improving Pheasant Brood Production: Programs and Practices for the Landowner” is an event set for Friday, May 17 at the Haxtun Community Center beginning at noon.

Lunch will be provided by Frenchman Creek Pheasants Forever.

The drought conditions from the last couple of years have contributed to the noticeable decline in pheasant numbers.

“While we can’t do anything to increase the amount of precipitation the area receives, we can work with landowners to develop and maintain the right kinds of habitat types that will help surviving birds be successful in producing the broods that will rebuild our pheasant population,” said Ed Gorman, small game manager for Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

Pheasants Forever and Colorado Parks and Wildlife Biologists will be on hand to give brief presentations on pheasant habitat requirements, which habitat types are the most limiting and treatments available to manage existing cover for upland bird production.

Landowners can learn about state, federal and local conservation programs like the Conservation Reserve Program, Environmental Quality Incentives Program and the Pheasant Habitat Improvement Program that are available to landowners. Financial assistance is often available to landowners to assist in the establishment and maintenance of the cover types that are valuable to wildlife.

“Practices in these programs are designed to help the landowner develop the habitat types that will carry bird populations through the tough drought years and allow them to flourish in normal years,” said Jerry Miller, habitat biologist for Pheasants Forever. “I encourage area landowners to attend this informative session so we can all work together to provide the habitat that is so essential for the pheasant population.”

There is no charge for this program, and folks are encouraged to come early to enjoy the delicious meal provided by the Frenchman Creek Pheasants Forever Chapter.
