Written by Holyoke Enterprise

In a year-end awards program that emphasized “for the students, by the students,” Holyoke High School’s FBLA chapter members celebrated their 2012-13 achievement Tuesday, April 30.

Ben Martinez provided guitar music as guests entered the auditorium Tuesday night, and members and their parents were introduced by Principal Susan Ortner to begin the awards program.

Chapter president Molly Brandt acknowledged parents and fellow FBLA members, thanking them for their support.

Special chapter awards were presented by adviser Kristie Ham to Brandt, who was selected by the chapter as outstanding member; and Xander Nelson, who was voted outstanding new member.

Additionally, Ham selected Kaylee Ham as the winner of the outstanding chapter contributions award for the hours of service she gave the chapter.

Ham also introduced the senior members present and told a story about each and their contributions to FBLA. Those recognized were Brandt, Alyssa Cordova, Brett Cumming, Martinez and Cierra Prelle.

Four members shared the meaning of FBLA, elaborating on Future, Business, Leaders and America. Those assisting in this part of the program were Nelson, A.J. Brandt, Brittney Prottsman and Prelle.

Molly Brandt paid tribute to adviser Ham, who will be retiring this year after 17 years as Holyoke High School’s FBLA adviser. It was also noted that Ham was recently selected for inclusion on the FBLA Adviser Wall of Fame in Reston, Va.

Also introduced was Gary Krumm, who was nominated by local chapter members and recognized at state convention as Business Person of the Year.

Others recognized for their support throughout the year were the HHS TV Productions crew and adviser Cindi Beavers, The Holyoke Enterprise, Principal Ortner, staff, school board members and the career and technical business advisory committee.

Special recognition was given to First Pioneer National Bank and Grainland Co-op for their sponsorship of the state leadership conference, as well as the 2012-13 local officer team for their dedication.

Members were recognized for district and state awards which were received in the past year, as well as chapter awards and achievements.

Staying with tradition of incorporating a patriotic presentation in the annual awards program, Brandt shared a video tribute to the heroes that serve this country.

She offered a salute to graduating FBLA members Matt Golden and Chris Pell who will be entering the U.S. Army and to Leo Ortiz who will be a U.S. Marine. “We appreciate your bravery and willingness to serve out country,” Brandt added.
