HHS track and field athletes have been busy in the past week. The Tuesday, April 30 meet in Yuma marked the third meet in six days for the team, who turned around and competed in the St. Vrain Invitational in Longmont Friday, May 3 and at the Burlington Invitational Saturday, May 4.
Both the boys and girls finished in sixth place out of 16 teams at Yuma.
Jacinda Krueger led the way in Yuma, finishing in the top three in all four of her events. She took the top spot in triple jump, second in the 100-meter dash and third in the 200-meter dash and in the 300-meter hurdles.
Roni Beavers leaps over a hurdle on her way to an eighth-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles at the Burlington Invitational Saturday, May 4.
Six Dragons traveled to Longmont to compete with the top teams and athletes in all classes. While no Holyoke athlete placed in the meet, most were able to improve their times and distances. Those who made the trip are Krueger, Edgar Cruz, Carlos Diaz, T.J. Gertner, Javy Rojo and Ryan Parker.
“That is where kids usually put up their best times because of the elevated competition,” coach Luke Thomas said. “They got to see a handful of kids they will see at state.”
Those who traveled to Longmont did not compete in Burlington. Both girls and boys finished 15th out of 16 teams at the Burlington meet.
With just one meet left in the regular season, a few Dragons are sitting in position to qualify for state by being ranked in the top 18. Krueger is currently sitting in 17th for the 100-meter dash and 13th in 300-meter hurdles. Carlos Diaz is in 17th place for 110-meter hurdles.
