|Sluggers compete in Sterling|

The Holyoke Sluggers posted a 2-2 record at the Sterling baseball tournament for ages 12 and under Friday-Sunday, May 31-June 2.
Holyoke, comprised of 10-11-year-olds, fell to the Sterling Tigers in Friday’s match 4-3. The game was back and forth with the Tigers gaining the lead in the final inning for the win.
Mason King led the Sluggers with a pair of singles in the loss.
Caleb Deaver had a strong performance on the mound for the Sluggers. He struck out eight Sterling batters and didn’t give up a single base on balls, while allowing seven hits.
On Saturday, the Sluggers squared off with a team from Sidney, Neb. Holyoke won the match by a score of 7-2.
King and Trevor Peterson had success at the plate as they both accounted for a pair of singles.
Xander Speicher, King and Blake Mosenteen handled pitching responsibilities in the game. They combined to strike out four, walk five and allow just two hits.
Sunday morning the Sluggers were victorious in a lopsided win over Fort Morgan, winning 17-5.
The game was closer than the score suggests as the Sluggers scored 12 runs in the final inning.
Deaver led the team offensively with a double and a pair of singles, while Slaten Burris also chipped in three singles. Braden Anderson and Peterson each supplied a pair of singles as well.
Miles Sprague, Mosenteen and Speicher combined to strike out seven batters, walk six and allow two hits.
In the final game of the tournament, Holyoke fell to the Sterling Zephyrs 8-1.
Burris hit a double while Miles Sprague, Speicher and King all chipped in singles.
Deaver, King and Speicher all pitched in the game, allowing 11 hits and five walks.
The Sluggers will return to competition Friday, June 7 for a weekend tournament in Ogalalla, Neb.
