Judy Sudmeier has joined the staff at Melissa Memorial Hospital as the new Family Nurse Practitioner. She recently moved to Holyoke from the Denver area and began working at MMH on June 23.

Holyoke Chamber of Commerce sponsored a grill-off at Homesteaders Park on the Fourth of July.

Operation: PC Cares coordinators receive a flag and certificate from Captain Jonathan Kleve and the 20th Special Operations Squadron as a gift to thank the community for their support through the PC Cares organization.

Dr. Stephen Bohrer began his new position as superintendent of the Holyoke School District on July 1.

With nearly twice as much precipitation in the first six months, 2003 is proving to be a wetter year compared to last year. A total of 8.77 inches of precipitation has been recorded for Holyoke in the first six months of 2003, compared to 4.52 for the same time period last year.

After two years of harvesting drought-stricken fields, area farmers are seeing significantly higher yields and good test weights as they bring in this year’s wheat crop.

July 14, 1988

Elwood “Woody” Johnson of Haxtun was hired by the Phillips County Commissioners and began his duties as director of the Department of Social Services on June 24.

Corn, bean, popcorn and alfalfa fields in the Colorado-Nebraska state line area were demolished Monday afternoon in a hailstorm that swept the area between 3:30-4 p.m.

The Do-A-Dab Club’s Farmer’s Market will begin its 1988 season July 19 on the Phillips County Courthouse lawn. Garden produce, baked goods and craft items may be sold.


Forty Years Ago
July 12, 1973

The Town of Holyoke recently purchased a Roto-Mist spraying unit, and employees of the town will be spraying streets and alleys daily.

Rains over the weekend relieved the hot, dry weather that residents of the area had been experiencing. Highest temperature reading was recorded on Friday with a reading of 109 degrees Fahrenheit.

The Housing Authority committee was presented the keys to the Holyoke Housing for senior citizens, which became home to eight tenants on Friday. More have moved into the apartments since the initial move, and it is now home to 22 residents.


Fifty Years Ago
July 11, 1963

Scattered showers and a few good rains in small sections brought some relief from the hot, dry weather during the past week, but more moisture is needed in most parts of eastern Colorado.

Rev. Vernon D. May, pastor of the Holyoke Church of the Nazarene for almost 17 years, will leave the local pastorate soon to enter full-time evangelistic work. Succeeding Rev. May as pastor of the church will be Rev. Milton McCreerly, who will come here from Karval. He is expected to conduct his first service here on July 28.

George B. Garland has announced the sale of the Phillips County Abstract Company to Mrs. Doris Kramer. Garland has owned and operated the business for eight and one-half years after buying the business from H.J. Hoppler.
