Wheat harvest nearly completed PDF Print E-mail

Due to cool, cloudy mornings throughout the week, Grainlaind Co-op grain merchandiser Steve Young said he has seen less trucks come through as the wheat harvest has slowed down a bit.

As of Tuesday morning, July 16, Young says the wheat harvest is roughly 80 percent complete and yields greatly differ around the county.

“Yields have just been all over the place,” Young said.

According to his estimations, yields will be somewhere between 15-45 bushels per acre around the county. The range is large because of spotty rain showers that hit some areas and missed others and the timing of when areas received the moisture.

North of Holyoke fared the best as that area received the most rain. East of Holyoke toward the state line also had a decent amount of moisture that helped the wheat.

Grainland averaged between 57-58 pounds per bushel on test weights, according to Young.

If the weather cooperates, the wheat harvest is expected to come to completion by the end of the week.
