Five Years Ago
Jeff and Tricia Michael will be opening a new pet store called Creature Features on Aug. 11 at 245 N. Interocean Ave., just north of Inklings Book Store.
Gary Krumm has been named branch manager at Holyoke’s Bank of Colorado office. He succeeds Jeff Franklin, who has accepted the position of senior vice president at the branch in Grand Junction.
Ten Years Ago
Family practitioner Kelby Bethards will be working in Holyoke at Melissa Memorial Hospital eight days a month. While he is here, he will work in the hospital, clinic and the emergency room, and he will be on call.
Thirteen charter members of the Amherst Volunteer Fire Department will be honored as the organization celebrates its 50th anniversary on Aug. 10, in conjunction with this year’s Amherst Days celebration.
Herman Leben, who has lived in the Amherst area since he was 6 years old, will celebrate his 100th birthday on Aug. 9.
Twenty-Five Years Ago
A satellite operation of Stone Motors Inc. in Julesburg will be opening in Holyoke this month in the former Dudden Implement building, which has most recently housed the S&S Auto business a mile east of Holyoke.
The apple wine entered by Bob Conklin of Holyoke was judged first overall in the homemade wine contest Wednesday afternoon at the Phillips County Fair.
Louise Mandrell performed at the Phillips County Fair Aug. 2 as the finale for the Holyoke centennial 100-day celebration.
Forty Years Ago
Holyoke Fire Department was called out Aug. 2 at 2:54 a.m. to extinguish a fire at Holyoke Liquors. The fire was reported to have started from faulty wiring and caused extensive damage to the building and ruined most of the store’s stock.
Great Western Producers Cooperative and Great Western United Corporation announced today that the purchase agreement under which the cooperative was to buy the Great Western Sugar Company had terminated by its terms on Aug. 1.
Holyoke Swim Club entered the district AAU record book last week when Randy Cox, 10, swam the 50-yard freestyle in 31.9 seconds to break the previous record of 32.7 seconds for the 9-10 age group.
Fifty Years Ago
The famous Kansas City Monarchs, world’s Negro professional league champions 15 times, will meet the Brandon Bombers in an exhibition baseball game to be played next Thursday, Aug. 15 at the Venango, Neb., park.
Three Holyoke men—Lyle McCormick and Robert and Roger Trumper—have been participating in the state semi-pro baseball tournament at Hugo.
Joe Kuntz, recently of Yuma, assumed new duties Aug. 1 as manager of the Holyoke Auto Parts store here. He succeeds Jerry Isaacson as manager of the store.
