Performing for the halftime show of the Denver Broncos/Dallas Cowboys game at Invesco Field this Sunday, Aug. 16 will be Holyoke’s own Sabrina Zink as a junior Denver Broncos cheerleader.

Faculty sick/personal days are proposed to change to “leave days” in Holyoke School District Re-1J. Currently, the teacher policy designates seven sick days and two personal days per year, but with the proposed change, teachers would have nine days to use for any purpose on an annual basis.

Aug. 14, 2003

West Nile Virus claimed its first human victim in Colorado on Aug. 1, with that number growing to five by Aug. 11. Holyoke received its first confirmed human case of WNV on Aug. 6 with a second case reported in Holyoke on Aug. 11.

Holyoke’s police force will soon be back up to three full-time officers. At its Aug. 5 meeting, Holyoke City Council approved the hiring of Shanole Allison, beginning Aug. 13.

Perry Ingram is the new district technology coordinator in the Holyoke School District. He began working July 1 and will be responsible for installing new computers and maintaining the other computers at the school.

Aug. 18, 1988

John Baldwin announced this week that he will be moving his Chevrolet-Buick dealership from its current location at 143 W. Denver St. to the old Bugs Supply building a mile east of the stoplight in Holyoke.

Charley and Sugar Triplette’s ninth annual threshing party and hog roast are scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 20, all day at the Triplette farm. Antique cars, tractor races, square dancing, stationary hay baling, volleyball competitions, farmers market, bake sale and live music are just a few of the added attractions at this year’s threshing party.

Aug. 16, 1973

Last Friday, a tornado was sighted northwest of Holyoke and, according to reports, touched down about one and a half miles west of Paoli. The only damage reported was to a combine belonging to Lester Lambert of Haxtun.

Jim Paloucek, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Paloucek, competed in the state meet in Englewood Aug. 7-8 for boy and girl swimmers 8 years old and younger. He was the only entry from Holyoke among approximately 250 swimmers from 31 teams in Colorado and brought home a sixth-place medal in the 50-yard freestyle.

Aug. 15, 1963

Holyoke boys who played in the regional Babe Ruth baseball tournament last week in Oskaloosa, Iowa, were sophomores Gene Schmidt, Larry Fritchel and Jim Mailander. They were members of the Northeastern All-Stars, Colorado state Babe Ruth champions.

The Holyoke open golf tournament on Sunday attracted 111 golfers from 24 towns.

Plans for Holyoke’s new ultra-modern hospital were unveiled this week, and an architect’s drawing of the proposed structure is now on display in the lobby of the First National Bank. The hospital, with estimated costs at $350,000, will be a gift to the people of this community from W.E. Heginbotham, pioneer Holyoke banker. It will be known as Melissa Memorial Hospital, in memory of Mr. Heginbotham’s mother.
