Mosquito pools in Morgan County test positive for WNV PDF Print E-mail
Written by Holyoke Enterprise

Three mosquito pools recently trapped in Morgan County have tested positive for West Nile virus. The pools, which were collected in mid-July in Fort Morgan, confirm what health officials already assume, that the virus is still active.

“Whether or not we’re seeing positive mosquito pools, we assume the virus is circulating,” said Dr. Tony Cappello, NCHD’s public health director.

“Mosquito surveillance efforts have been severely cut back across the state over the past few years to the point where we’re only testing mosquitoes from one community in northeast Colorado right now. History has shown us that West Nile virus is firmly established in Colorado, whether we’re testing for it or not, and that residents need to take precautions every spring and summer to avoid what can become a very serious, and sometimes deadly, illness.”
