Sept. 11 remembrance is Wednesday

A Sept. 11 remembrance event, sponsored by Holyoke Chamber of Commerce and Phillips County Extension, will be held next Wednesday, Sept. 11 at 7:30 a.m. at First Christian Church.

The community is invited to gather on the front lawn of the church by a flag placed by the Lions Club for a prayer by Pastor Merle Powell. Everyone is encouraged to take a few minutes before the start of the day to remember and honor the men, women and children who lost their lives Sept. 11, 2001, and to pray for those injured and those who died saving the lives of others.

Refreshments will be offered inside the church immediately following the service.

HVFD tends to 2 gas leaks

Two gas meter leaks were the reason for the sirens this past week. The first siren was blown Saturday, Aug. 31 at 7:30 p.m. for a gas meter leak on the 100 block of North Worley Avenue. The meter showed no signs of being hit.

The second siren sounded Monday, Sept. 2 at 12:35 p.m. for a gas meter leak in the alley east of Family Dollar.

In both instances, the gas was shut off and SourceGas was notified.
