2001 HHS grads Jason Reynolds and Brendon McCarthy crossed the U.S.-Mexico border on foot on Oct. 1 to begin a two-year trek through Central and South America, Africa and Asia to discover cultures in areas not normally traveled.

On Saturday, Sept. 27, 5-year-old McKenna Edwards took first place in this year’s junior division of the regional Pumpkin Weigh-Off, sponsored by the Rocky Mountain Giant Vegetable Growers. Her pumpkin weighed in at 171.5 pounds.

Oct. 2, 2003

Of 600 special districts in the state, East Phillips County Hospital District was recently selected as the Special District of the Year. Hospital administrator Arlene Harms accepted the award at the Special District Association of Colorado’s annual conference in Keystone Sept. 24-26.

Leon Atkins of Atkins Motors was recognized as the 2003 Honored Business Entrepreneur by the Tri-State Initiative for Economic Development at its annual conference held Sept. 11-12 in McCook, Neb.

Oct. 6, 1988

First Community Bankshares, Inc. has purchased the First National Bank of Holyoke from Colorado National Bankshares, Inc.

Marv, Wilma and Norm Tanner, owners of Video Barn in Holyoke, have announced that the business will be moving to the Holyoke Home Improvement building at 128 S. Interocean Ave. as of Oct. 8.

Starting late this week, Gary and Pam Brown of Video Den in Holyoke will be opening a second location for their business, to be known as “The Theatre Video” at the old Peerless Theatre building at 212 S. Interocean Ave. Ralph and Linda Statz will serve as managers.

Oct. 4, 1973

Clifford Cronin Jr. has been named administrator of Melissa Memorial Hospital by the hospital board of directors. He assumed his duties on Oct. 1.

During the past week, cooler weather and rain amounting to 1.76 inches has caused the harvest of dry beans to slow down due to the wet fields.

Expenditures of $884,000 are estimated for the 1974 Re-1J School District general fund. This is an 8.4 percent increase over the $778,747 budgeted in 1973.


Fifty Years Ago

Oct. 3, 1963

A youth crusade, conducted by gospel ventriloquist Victor Etienne of St. Paul, Minn., will be held at the Holyoke Assembly of God Church Oct. 8-18.

The first stage of the development of a comprehensive plan for Holyoke was presented at a recent joint meeting of the Holyoke planning and zoning commissions. This included a new city map and a colored map showing the use of each piece of property in town, which will be used to prepare for the future growth of Holyoke and the development of a zoning ordinance.

Cool nights and warm, sunny days have been the rule in Phillips County during the past week, with temperatures ranging from 90 degrees down to 37.
