Highway 23 petition circulating in area PDF Print E-mail
Written by Holyoke Enterprise

A plea to the Colorado Department of Transportation to actively pursue reconstruction of an 18-mile stretch of Colorado Highway 23 from Holyoke northeast to the Colorado-Nebraska state line is the subject of a petition that’s currently being circulated.

Dale Vieselmeyer, who farms near Amherst, started the effort and is distributing petitions for people to sign in and around Holyoke and Amherst, as well as Venango, Neb.

Phillips County commissioners signed the petition at a recent meeting.

The petition states that the stretch of Highway 23 has significant truck traffic for market-to-bin crop storage, livestock handling and grain being marketed outside the production area.

With the addition of a train grain-loading facility in May 2014, traffic will increase, notes the petition. “Colorado 23 is significantly deteriorated and is in need of total reconstruction.”

Vieselmeyer said he believes business has been lost because of the deteriorated highway. He encourages residents of the area to sign the petition to show support for the reconstruction effort.
