1925 HHS football players defeat Wray team for the first time ever PDF Print E-mail
Written by Holyoke Enterprise

A team photo of Holyoke’s 1925 football team is featured in the Enterprise’s 125th commemorative calendar for the month of November.

The players had a decent season, winning five games and losing four. Their opponents included Big Springs, 7-0; Imperial, 6-12; Fort Morgan, 0-26; Julesburg, 13-12; Wray, 6-3; Sterling, 7-14; Crook, 26-6; Haxtun, 2-6; and Akron, 24-19.

Lawrence Wilcox coached the season. Wilcox was the first coach for the Dragons in 1915 and 1916. He returned to coach 1925-26 and again in 1944.

The season is remembered as the one where Holyoke gridders took to a muddy field and left victorious over Wray for the first time since they began competing in 1914. The game was originally set for Friday, Oct. 23, but due to a decision by the Wray school board prohibiting games on school days, athletic authorities decided to move the game to Saturday rather than not playing. The only touchdown of the game was scored by Holyoke during the third play of the second quarter following a 15-yard penalty against Wray which put Holyoke on Wray’s 12-yard line.
