HHS alum becomes an Aussie studying abroad PDF Print E-mail
Written by Sarah Heermann, Adelaide, Australia

Several blessings have allowed me to study abroad, one being the unique study abroad programs that the University of Denver offers. DU encourages their students to study abroad and offers a semester abroad at the same tuition as a quarter at DU.

The scholarships and grants that a student has received stateside apply to their tuition, with college credits earned abroad transferring as well. Additionally, the Cherrington Global scholarship DU offers dedicated students, pays for their flights. This helped me substantially, since Australia is the furthest country from the U.S.!

In addition to academic opportunities at the University of Adelaide and St. Mark’s College, Sarah Heermann took advantage of experiences unique to Australia. She is pictured at right while scuba diving on the Great Barrier Reef.

I was drawn to Adelaide, Australia because of the small town’s artsy charm, and the University of Adelaide is highly ranked as one of the Group of Eight (top eight universities in the nation).

The warm climate and beaches, outstanding wildlife and flora and safe traveling environment have earned the city of Adelaide a ranking in the top 10 best cities to visit, according to Lonely Planet.

Adelaide and its surrounding area is the wine capital of Australia and is known for its frequent festivals, relaxed atmosphere, close beaches, open air markets and many historic churches. One of these churches, St. Peter’s Cathedral, is located next to where I live at St. Mark’s College. Often by sighting the church’s tall steeples, I can find my way home from nearly any part of the city.
