Kamery earns nod as top assistant coach in CO vball PDF Print E-mail

In just four years, Doug Kamery has experienced more success as an assistant coach for the Fleming Wildcats volleyball program than many coaches do in an entire career. In addition to helping lead the team to three trips to the 1A finals, Kamery was also recently named by the Colorado High School Coaches Association as the 2013 Colorado Assistant Coach of the Year.

Kamery, who lives in Haxtun and works in Holyoke as the Phillips County Assessor, also serves as the junior varsity and C team coach at Fleming High School.

In the days following the Nov. 9 state championship game, in which Fleming claimed their second state title in the four years since Kamery joined the coaching staff, the team gathered one final time for the season to turn in uniforms. Kamery said he became a bit suspicious when his wife and head coach Derek Herbert’s wife showed up.

To Kamery’s surprise, coach Herbert then made the announcement of the award. The news blindsided Kamery as he wasn’t even aware that Herbert had nominated him.

“I was shocked—actually I was speechless. And people who know me know that doesn’t happen very often,” Kamery said.
