Lady Dragon basketball kicked off the season with a dominating performance in hostile territory as they took down cross-county rivals Haxtun on the road 60-35 Friday, Dec. 6.
“This was a good, solid win to start the Lady Dragons’ season,” coach Arlan Scholl said. “The girls did well with our full-court ball pressure. We had some first game jitters and missed some easy layups early in the game, but settled down and passed the ball well and played great team basketball.”

Holyoke 60, Haxtun 35
Although Holyoke was a bit inconsistent near the hoop in the opening quarter, their suffocating defensive pressure stymied any Haxtun offensive threat. The full-court pressure had the Lady Bulldogs struggling to inbound the ball as Holyoke racked up 28 steals in the match.
With just under two minutes remaining in the first quarter, Haxtun put the ball in the hoop for the first time. Holyoke maintained a 14-5 lead at the conclusion of the period.
Holyoke turnovers allowed Haxtun to pull within six in the opening minutes of the second quarter, but the Lady Dragons piled on the points as half closed out. With Zuri Lopez leading the successful transition game for Holyoke, the Lady Dragons entered half up 33-17.
The girls in green continued to light up the scoreboard as they outscored Haxtun 18-10 in the third quarter to increase their lead to 51-27 heading into the final quarter. Lopez and Maddie King each scored six points in the quarter.
