HHS girls’ basketball remains at .500 after splitting a pair of games with Yuma and Wiggins last week. After falling to Yuma Tuesday, Jan. 21 on the road by a large margin, the Lady Dragons took it to the Wiggins girls, beating them by more than 30 points Friday, Jan. 24.

“The Lady Dragons had a good week of basketball,” coach Arlan Scholl said. “We would have liked to have beaten Yuma, but we just did not handle their full-court pressure well enough and we had too many turnovers.”

Holyoke 45, Yuma 66

Holyoke hit the road Tuesday night for a conference match with the Yuma Lady Indians. With a 66-45 win, Yuma completed the 2-0 regular season sweep of the HHS girls.

A rough first quarter had the Holyoke girls facing a 9-26 deficit after just eight minutes of play. Yuma capitalized on their stingy defense as they converted a number of turnovers into buckets on the offensive end of the court.

Scoring slowed in the second quarter for both teams as Holyoke amassed just five points and Yuma scored nine.

“I feel like our defense played well and we competed pretty well in the half court game, but we just had problems early in the game with breaking the press,” Scholl said.

“We had worked on a press breaker that would have worked well, but we just did not execute. We will continue to work on that area of our game because we will continue to face teams that press us.”
