3 City Council seats open for election
Holyoke City Council will hold an election Tuesday, April 8 for three board seats to serve four-year terms.
The seats of current board members Brian Akey, Steve Moore and J.C. Peckham are up for election. Akey and Peckham have expressed their plans to run for re-election while Moore is undecided.
Nomination petitions are due at the city office by Friday, March 14. The last day to file an affidavit of intent to be a write-in is Tuesday, March 18.
Nominations sought for hospital district
East Phillips County Hospital District will hold an election Tuesday, May 6 for three directors to serve four-year terms.
The seats of current directors Steve Young, Michael “Woody” Woodhead and Sheryl Farnsworth are up for election. Young and Farnsworth indicated plans to run for re-election, and Woodhead could not be reached for comment.
The deadline to submit self-nomination and acceptance is Friday, Feb. 28. The forms can be picked up at Melissa Memorial Hospital from John Ayoub, the district designated election official.
Dragon fans to wear green this Thursday
Dragon Hoopsters remind all Dragon fans to get out their green gear this Thursday, Feb. 13 for the Green Out basketball game. Holyoke takes on their Phillips County rival, the Haxtun Bulldogs, in the HHS gym, beginning at 4 p.m.
Chocolate Affair is Sunday
Delightful desserts and sweets can be sampled Sunday, Feb. 16 at the Phillips County Historical Society’s annual Chocolate Affair. Fall in love and fall into chocolate from 1:30-4 p.m. at Phillips County Museum in Holyoke.

Holyoke Re-1J School District will not have school on Presidents Day, Monday, Feb. 17.
HVFD called to duty 3 times
It was a busy week for the Holyoke Volunteer Fire Department as they responded to three scenes.
Sirens were first sounded Tuesday, Feb. 4 at approximately 7 p.m. for a fire at 601 W. Gordon St.
Friday, Feb. 7 at roughly 10:20 p.m., firefighters were called to 626 S. Baxter Ave. for a gas meter that had been hit. SourceGas was notified.
A single-vehicle rollover was the reason for the last siren at 3:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 10. The crash occurred just south of the intersection of Phillips County Road 37 and Highway 6. No extrication was needed, and firefighters assisted EMS.
