Holyoke basketball boys dominated their Saturday, Feb. 8 match with Wray, handing the visiting Eagle team a 76-32 drubbing.
Wray had a strong first minute, gaining an early 5-0 lead over Holyoke. Dragon basketball players responded with an 18-3 stretch to gain a sizable first quarter lead. Tito Fierro fueled the run, scoring nine points in the quarter. At the conclusion of the first period, Holyoke controlled the game with a 20-12 lead.
Coach Scott Dille said Holyoke players weren’t playing together as a team in the first half as well as they have been this season.
In the physical match, Holyoke overpowered the Eagles in the paint. HHS controlled the glass, continuously scoring on second-chance opportunities after offensive rebounds. Wray struggled to get past Holyoke’s full-court press after HHS made baskets as Holyoke held the Eagles scoreless for the final five and a half minutes of the second quarter.
The Dragons finished the first half up 31-14 after outscoring Wray 11-2 in the second quarter.
