Holyoke opened the 2008-09 girls’ basketball season with a tough 34-72 loss to returning State Champs at Wray Tuesday, Dec 2. It was tough for the team to get ahead when Wray had all their starters from last year returning.
Coach Arlan Scholl said, “This was a tough assignment for our team’s first game.” The girls just couldn’t get into any kind of offensive rhythm. He added the girls gave a good effort, but noted they just weren’t ready to play at this level this early in the season.
Wray scored double digits in each quarter to dominate over the HHS girls’ team. The Eagles led the first quarter by 12 points, and Holyoke just could not catch up with Wray’s offense for the remainder of the game.
The leading HHS scorer for the varsity game was Maddie Starkebaum with eight points, followed by Phawn Carper and Katie Hoffner with seven each.
Marissa Smith, Flor Varela and Nora Roth were all 100 percent from the free-throw line, making two for two. Smith and Hoffner both scored three pointers.
HHS girls had an overall better free-throw percentage than the Eagles. Holyoke had 71 percent at the charity line, while Wray was only at 57 percent. Holyoke made 12-17 free throws, while Wray sank 16 of 28.
Leading rebounders were Smith and Starkebaum, getting six each and Roth pulled down five.
“We all look forward to preparing to play Wray again later in the season. The girls are continuing to work hard in practice and have a very good work ethic and attitude,” said coach Scholl.
The girls C team hosted Imperial, Neb. Tuesday, Dec. 9 with results to follow in next week’s Enterprise.
In upcoming action the Holyoke girls will host Akron Tuesday, Dec. 16.
