Five HHS wrestlers gained experience in last weekend’s state wrestling tournament to encourage them to work hard for next year’s season.

Dylon Lousberg, at 132 lbs., and Luke Stewart, at 160, both earned one win on the state mats after losing their first-round bouts.

Eric Rojo at 106 lbs., Fernando Lopez at 120 and Sid Struckmeyer at 285 can feel good about earning a state tournament berth but went 0-2 in the tourney.

Lousberg is a freshman; Rojo, Lopez and Struckmeyer are sophomores; and Stewart is a junior.

“The state tournament was bittersweet, as it is great to qualify five guys to wrestle and represent Holyoke, but I left the matside knowing we didn’t perform our best in the biggest moment,” said coach Cutter Garrison.

“I felt a couple were satisfied with just being there. We lost some tough matches and made some mistakes that are detrimental at that level of wrestling,” he added.

“The positive of this year’s state tournament was that we didn’t have any seniors, so they all will return for the team next season.”

Garrison said he told the boys, “The excuses that we are young, inexperienced, good try and there is always next year are over.”
