Holyoke 52, Burlington 28
It was smooth sailing for the Lady Dragons Tuesday in the first round of the 2A District 2 basketball tournament. With a win necessary to extend the season another week and guarantee a spot at the regional level, Holyoke pulled away with a 52-28 home victory over Burlington.
“The girls came out fired up and ready to play against Burlington,” coach Arlan Scholl said. “We wanted to set the tone and get a fast, aggressive tempo to the game. They did just that.”
Holyoke controlled the opening period with a smothering defense that shutout the Lady Cougars for the first five minutes of the game, allowing HHS to build a 12-0 lead. Burlington girls had multiple empty possessions in the first quarter, often times turning the ball over before getting off a shot attempt.
Maddie King was a force in the paint, battling down low for rebounds and baskets. She racked up 11 points in the first eight minutes to lead Holyoke to a 21-point first quarter.
