Odds were against the Dragon basketball team entering the state tournament. With a seventh-seed, Holyoke had to upset a school ranked higher than them to extend their season to Saturday for a shot at placing.

In the first round of the tournament, the Dragons were pitted against No. 2 Lutheran Thursday, March 13. Holyoke fell 42-77 to move to the consolation bracket where they faced sixth-seeded Meeker Friday, March 14. With a 69-54 Dragon victory, Holyoke advanced to the state consolation championship.

Determined not to go 0-2 at the state tournament, Holyoke boys persevered through a back-and-forth dual with Meeker Friday to upset the Cowboys 69-54.

“I couldn’t be more proud of how the guys responded after Thursday’s letdown,” coach Scott Dille said. “The kids really wanted to do well Thursday and put on a good performance and I think they felt like they let themselves down. But they woke up ready to go Friday.”

Holyoke promptly pulled ahead as Tito Fierro sank a jump shot and made a transition layup and Logan Tharp knocked down a pair of free throws in the first two minutes. Meeker responded with a seven-point run to take the lead.
