As a rural economic development director, I receive many email newsletters about economic development and what we can do to “grow” our communities. I recently came across an article that suggests a very viable way to grow Holyoke and Haxtun.

The article is authored by Becky McCray, who lives and works in rural Oklahoma. McCray is a small town business owner, she and her husband own a cattle ranch, and she writes and speaks about small town businesses. She is also the co-author of the award-winning book, “Small Town Rules.”

People ask all the time how they can help save their small town. I always say, “Start your own business.” Here are four reasons why starting your own business is the best thing you can do to help your small town prosper.

1. When you start a business, you decide what values to put first.
