With the opportunity to showcase their talent in front of a supportive home crowd, Holyoke tracksters recorded 13 top-three finishes as the boys finished the day in second place and the girls in sixth out of 12 teams Saturday, April 5.
Fifteen times throughout the day, Dragon boys were able to score points for the Holyoke team. HHS boys finished with 89 points, good enough for second place behind Wray with 122. The Lady Dragons accumulated 55 points for sixth place. Wray girls also took the top spot, scoring 147.
Covered with hurdles bearing the Holyoke name, Roni Beavers races down the new track during the first 100-meter hurdle event held in Holyoke in years.
“We did much better than last week,” coach Sandra Rahe said. “I think being in front of the home crowd really helped the team. They didn’t want to look slow at home.”
Holyoke athletes recorded personal bests 35 times during the meet. While many of the personal bests came from underclassmen who have not had many meets, the improvement is still a positive sign for the young squad.
