“What’s best for kids” is the steady focus for Holyoke Schools Superintendent Bret Miles. And he has led the force, not only for Holyoke Re-1J, but for all of rural Colorado.
“All of his work in this district and throughout Colorado leads directly back to the heart of education and the heart of who Mr. Miles is—a dedicated advocate for the success of students,” said Holyoke Leadership Team chair Angie Powell.
It was a surprise award at the end of the planned Emerald Awards program Thursday, April 24, when Miles was recognized with the Dragon Visionary Award.
He was honored for demonstrating his ability to communicate a vision and then even more importantly, to do the work through a shared leadership model to carry out that vision. The honor extended to Miles’ visionary leadership throughout the state.
Nominated by the Leadership Team in the district, Miles made his way to the podium while audience members rose to their feet for a standing ovation.
“I’m not speechless very often, but I was Thursday night,” said Miles, in acknowledging how much he valued the tribute instigated by the Leadership Team.
