Mountain States Children’s Home in Longmont will be the beneficiary of a fundraiser in Holyoke planned by Holyoke Church of Christ.
Diana McCormick of Holyoke visited and toured the children’s home and is one of the coordinators of the local garage sale/bake sale which is scheduled this Saturday, June 21 from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. It will be held at Holyoke Church of Christ, located at 105 W. Scheunemann on the south edge of Holyoke.
Mountain States Children’s Home is a peaceful, secure place. The 155 acres of land provides the opportunity to have livestock and open space with plenty of room for children to stretch their legs.
The foresight of the founders in attaining the property provides an opportunity to be in a peaceful environment, according to the home’s website. Animals can be very therapeutic in nature, it was noted.
Cultivated gardens help children understand the process and dedication that it takes to grow sources of food. It teaches them the skill of gardening and the preparation of meals through their work.
Selling hay and pigs is a source of revenue for the farm operation.
McCormick noted that 70 percent of the income for the home, however, comes from donations such as the local church’s fundraiser.
