|Soccer’s popularity on the rise|

On any given night throughout the year, groups of athletes can be spotted at any and all open fields in Holyoke, racing back and forth, chasing a soccer ball.
While soccer may not be the first activity that comes to mind when the topic of Holyoke sports is brought up—as there is no official organized league in town at the elementary, junior or senior high levels—the popularity of the sport is hard to ignore.
Something happens in America every four years, however, that reminds those less familiar with the sport of its international impact. The FIFA World Cup, considered by many to be the most popular sporting event globally, began the month-long campaign to crown one country as the best team in the world Thursday, June 12.
Soccer, which is often perceived as the most popular sport in the world, has been gaining ground in America—including Holyoke—especially as the World Cup is under way.
While baseball is generally referred to as America’s pastime and the Super Bowl is considered by many to be the top sporting event each year, the World Cup is watched by more people worldwide than the Super Bowl and World Series combined.
