|Local actors give passionate performance of ‘Steel Magnolias’|
|Written by Becca Brandt|
Audience members laughed and cried right alongside the cast of “Steel Magnolias” during their three performances, Friday-Sunday, June 27-29.
Set in a Louisiana beauty parlor, the story follows the joys and struggles of six sassy Southern women.
Shop owner Truvey Jones, played by Dolly Smith, hires young Annelle, played by Anastasia Conklin, to work in her shop just as she is preparing for one of her client’s weddings.
Annelle barely has time to get acquainted with the shop before Truvey’s usual customers come in on a Saturday morning.
First to arrive is Clairee, played by Penny Dockins. She pours herself a cup of hotdog-flavored coffee and catches up on the latest gossip and sports news with Truvey.
Not long after, bride-to-be Shelby, played by Hannah Conklin, comes in to get her hair done before her wedding that afternoon. Shelby is all smiles as she goes on about the pink-themed affair.
M’Lynn (Karen Swan, left) tries to give her daughter Shelby (Hannah Conklin, center) some juice to help with an episode brought on by her diabetes. Truvey and Clairee (Dolly Smith and Penny Dockins, back center and right) offer assistance while newcomer Annelle (Anastasia Conklin, back left) steps back in shock. —Enterprise photo
Annelle gets put to work straight away when Shelby’s mother, M’Lynn, played by Karen Swan, arrives to get some hair attention before the wedding, too.
Loud and outrageous Ouiser Boudreaux, played by Karla Satterlee, is the last to arrive in the shop, complaining that her poor dog needs sedated and all the magnolias are gone from her tree.
Thus, the strange friendship of six very different women unfolds in a beauty parlor.
With one quick rip, Annelle (Anastasia Conklin, right) waxes Ouiser’s (Karla Satterlee, left) upper lip. —Enterprise photo
