College junior Austin Killin has taken a step out of the ordinary this summer for a behind-the-scenes look at U.S. politics. The 2012 HHS grad is heading into his second month in a congressional internship in Rep. Cory Gardner’s Washington, D.C., office.

An application and interview process sent him to the nation’s capital from July 1 through Sept. 5.

Killin and five other interns have been assisting with administrative duties, like researching legislation, giving tours, going to briefings and hearings, taking notes for staffers, answering phone calls and checking mail.

However, Killin’s favorite part has been the relational side of the internship, like getting to know others in his office and having meaningful talks with people who are working on the same things he is.
