Either people love ’em or they hate ’em. It’s garage sale season, and since Saturday, Aug. 9, is National Garage Sale Day, learning the ins and outs of garage sales will help produce both successful buyers and sellers.
Preparation is key. When planning a garage sale, begin collecting items from around the house that can help declutter or maybe even make a bit of money. What one person thinks is trash might be just the thing someone else is looking for.
As items are gathered, use stickers or tape to attach prices. Local experienced garage saler Frances Muths emphasized pricing is very important. “Do I want to get rid of it?” she asks herself, and if that answer is a strong yes, the price better be low enough to entice buyers.
And as a shopper herself, Muths likes having a price listed instead of having to make an offer. It gives her an idea of what the seller is expecting. “I don’t want to offend anyone by offering too low,” she said.
Garage salers are looking for a bargain. So if someone wants to sell an expensive piece of furniture or a collectible/antique, they should consider selling it separately online or in the newspaper.
So everything’s gathered and priced, now what? Individual garage sales can be very effective, but multi-party or neighborhood sales are even better.
