Holyoke baseball players compete in Colo. All-Star tournaments July 26-29 PDF Print E-mail

Holyoke was represented by players on all three of the Border League baseball teams in the 13, 14 and 14/15-year-old All-Star tournaments held July 25-29.

13-year-olds

Players on the 13-year-old Border League All-Star team were coached by Mike Davison of Caliche and Clint Dunker of Ovid. Holyoke participants included Trevor Dalton, playing shortstop and left field and pitching; Tanner Smith, who played right field and third base; and Logan Tharp, first base, outfield and pitcher.

After playing four games in Limon, the team took third in the tournament, winning bronze medals.

In their first game, the team played East Central. Border League won easily, beating them 13-3. With one win under their belt, Border League went on to play Union Pacific on Sunday. After an exciting game that went into nine innings, Border League All-Stars pulled ahead to win 9-5.

Turning around to play a second game Sunday, the team went up against Southeast Denver Prep, where Border League suffered their first loss with a score of 4-15. Southeast Denver Prep went on to win the tournament.

Monday the Border League team faced Santa Fe, losing 3-10, and ending their time in the 13-year-old All-Star Baseball Tournament.

14-year-olds

Holyoke players on the 14-year-old Border League All-Star team included Logan Zeiler, who played infield, and catcher Jaydin Goldenstein. The team played in Rocky Ford, coached by Anthony Serrato, Derek Bueltell and Bob Vandenbark of Fleming.

After five tournament games, Border League All-Stars finished in second place.

In game one, Border League faced Tri County, beating them easily 13-1. Holyoke’s Jaydin Goldenstein, playing catcher at the time, received a concussion in the game, marking his last play in the tournament.

Game two was a tough competition against Santa Fe. Border All-Stars lost 0-10. In the next game the Border League took their second win against Lamar, 3-0.

A second game against Santa Fe proved victorious for the Border League, with a 10-0 win. Playing Santa Fe again, Border League lost 3-10 in their last game of the tournament.

14/15-year-olds

Playing in Salida for the 14/15-year-old Border League All-Star team were Broc Pelle, who pitched and played third, and Reid Baumgartner, infielder. Under the direction of coaches Mark Valko and Kevin Valko of Wray, the team took fourth place in the tournament.

East Central was the Border League team’s first competition in the tournament. East Central came out on top, beating Border All-Stars 13-0.

Game two was an 11-2 win against Fountain Valley. In the third game against Salida, Border League was victorious, with a score of 7-3.

The final Border League game in the tournament was a 2-6 loss to Tri County. Tri County went on to win the 14/15 year-old tournament.
