Mike Bodner - December 05, 2008
Michael Walter Bodner, Sr. (Mike), age 52, died in his home in South Carolina early Friday morning, Dec. 5, 2008.
His daughters Ashley Bodner and Nicole Streeb, his wife Anne Bodner, his sister-in-law Mari Hammel and nephew Austin Hammel were with him as he took his last breath.
Mike was born in New Britain, Conn. Jan. 22, 1956. He joined the Air Force when he was 17 and served proudly for 20 years as an Air Force Law man.
While in the military, he was involved in the evacuation of Saigon, Vietnam. He was stationed in Guam, Norton and March AFB. He was also in California, Alaska, Korea, West Berlin, Germany and Biloxi, Miss.
Some of his jobs included Presidential and distinguished visitor protection, counter-sniper duties, criminal investigation, resources protection, air base ground defense squad leader, flight leader, anti-terrorism planning and was the pass and registration program director.
He was medically retired in February, 1994 due to a back injury he received while on duty. He was attending college at Colorado State University and came within one semester of getting his B.S. in social work with a minor in criminal justice when in October, 1999 it was discovered he had a brain tumor.
Mike joined American Legion Post 90 and became a lifetime member of VFW Post 6482 of Holyoke in 1998. He served a year as Commander, was chairman of the Vets board for three years and was the quartermaster of the VFW post for five years. Mike felt a strong loyalty to veterans and their rights.
Mike was very passionate about learning, consistently reading and studying just about every subject.He regularly encouraged all his children to follow his lead in reaching higher levels of education.
Mike is survived by his wife Anna Marie Bodner; 10 children, John Bodner, Sandra Bodner and her husband Rodney Lambrecht, Christopher Bodner and his wife Brenda, Rebecca Bodner, Jessica Bodner, Michael Bodner Jr., Jonathan Streeb, Zachary Streeb, Nicole Streeb and Ashley Bodner; eight grandchildren, Gianna and Christian Bodner, Jozsef and Kyleigh Lambrecht, Samantha and Amy Crumine, Troy Dietrich and Daniel Phillips; and sister Helen (Bodner) Krupa and her husband Walter.
Mike was a beloved son, brother, father and an eternally-loved husband. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and all whose lives he touched along the way.However, there is a consolation in knowing that life for him has not ended but only begun in a better land.
A memorial will be held sometime in the summer of 2009 in Holyoke at the Vets Club. A memorial fund has been established at Holyoke Federal Credit Union, 101 W. Denver, Holyoke, CO 80734.
