LeRoy Guernsey - March 16, 2010

Charles “LeRoy” Guernsey, 64, of Broken Bow, Neb., was born May 15, 1945 in Holyoke to Clifford and Ilene Guernsey. He died at home March 16, 2010 with his wife and family by his side.

LeRoy grew up in Colorado and Wyoming and graduated from high school in Douglas, Wyo. in 1963. He attended Platte Valley Bible College where he met Linda Lewis of Pierre, S.D. They were married in Scottsbluff, Neb. June 4, 1967. LeRoy and Linda were blessed with five children: Rhonda Louise, Terry Lee, John LeRoy, Lorie Lynn and Chad Lewis.

He served his country faithfully in the Air Force from 1965-1969, stationed at Travis Air Force Base in California. Then he returned to Platte Valley Bible College in 1973 with a Bachelor of Arts degree.

After finishing Bible college, the family moved to Bayard, Iowa where LeRoy began his first ministry at Bayard Church of Christ. He served the Lord there for six years. He was next led to Lillian Church of Christ in 1980 where he ministered to the community, church and youth. He especially had a heart for young people and took many on spiritually-enriching trips. The people he met there and the experiences he had had a lasting impact upon his life and the lives of all he touched.

In the early 1990s he began working for the United States Post Office as a rural route driver until he retired in 2007 at the age of 62. He enjoyed visiting with the people on his route on a daily basis.

LeRoy loved the outdoors and camping. On many occasions he took his family all over the region on camping trips. The memories and stories from these trips are held closely in the hearts of members of his family. He often spent time with his younger brother, Lynn, on many adventures. In July 2009, a lifelong dream was fulfilled when his oldest son, John and his wife Gina, took LeRoy and Linda on a week-long cruise to Alaska.

In 2008 he was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease). Because of his service in the Air Force, the Disabled American Veterans were of great assistance to LeRoy in his final years. He went home to be with the Lord with his family surrounding his bedside.

LeRoy was preceded in death by his father, Clifford Guernsey. He is survived by his wife, Linda of Broken Bow, Neb.; mother, Ilene Guernsey Speicher and step-father, Bernard Speicher of Holyoke; daughters, Rhonda Winchester and husband Nick of Kearney, Neb. and Lorie Saathoff and husband Shaun of Waverly, Neb.; sons, Terry Guernsey and wife Kara of Lincoln, Neb., John Guernsey and wife Gina of Lincoln and Chad Guernsey of Columbus, Neb.; sister, Ganita Budd and husband Al of Ozark, Mo.; brother, Lynn Guernsey of Holyoke; sister-in-law, Ruth Cassel of Broken Bow; and 13 grandchildren.
