Lola Cunningham - April 10, 2010

Lola Mae (Alberts) Shull Cunningham, 68, was born Oct. 9, 1941 in Holyoke. She died peacefully in her country home on April 10, 2010 in Lohrvile, Iowa.

Lola was the second of six children born to Chester and Hazel (Vogel) Alberts. She attended Holyoke schools, graduating from Phillips County High School in 1959. Following graduation, she worked at The Holyoke Enterprise.

Lola married Bill Lichtenberg Feb. 14, 1960. To this union three children were born. Bill’s job took them to Kansas, Wyoming and Iowa, where Lola raised her family. Bill and Lola divorced. Through Lola’s love of horses she met and later married Bob Shull. As time passed, their lives changed and their marriage ended.

Lola worked at Bowie Manufacturing in Lake City, Iowa for 20 years. This is where she met her friend and the love of her life, Rick Cunningham. The two of them spent many hours making their country house a warm and inviting home.

Lola had a love for animals all of her life. She loved riding her horse and raising dogs and enjoyed raising and selling exotic pheasants, peacocks and chickens. Tending her flower gardens, reading and crocheting were other enjoyable hobbies of hers.

Lola was preceded in death by her father, Chester Alberts, and brother-in-law, Merle Bennett, Jr.

She is survived by her husband, Rick; son Scott Lichtenberg and wife Kristi of Garland, Texas; daughters, Tonia Barrix and husband Kenny of Midlothian, Texas and Lisa Ristvedt and husband Steve of Boone, Iowa; step-children, Craig Cunningham and wife Tara of Lohrville, Jay Cunningham and wife Steph of Lohrville and Mona Potts and husband Chad of Lake City; sisters, Peggy Bennett of Holyoke, Frances Smith of Cleburne, Texas and Linda Bly and husband Mitchell of Holyoke; brothers, Lavern Alberts and wife Linda of Holyoke and James Alberts and wife Marlene of Loveland; brother-in-law Jim Smith of Deltona, Fla.; sisters-in-law, Lavon Green and husband Gary of Lake City, Ruth Busch and husband Jerry of Lohrville and Mary Tannehill and husband Jerry of Lohrville; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends. Lola will also be missed by her two little dogs who were her constant companions.

Lola loved living in Iowa and with her wonderful sense of humor, would often say, “You know what Iowa stands for, don’t you? Idiots Out Wandering Around.” She will be greatly missed!

Memorials may be sent to Peggy Bennett, 16691 County Road 59, Holyoke, CO 80734 and they will be forwarded to Rick Cunningham. There is a fund set up in regards to Lola’s passionate love for animals.
