Harold Banaka - October 14, 2010
Harold W. Banaka, 91, was born Sept. 15, 1919 in rural Yuma County to August and Annebelle (Thomas) Banaka. He died Oct. 14, 2010 in Holyoke.
He was the seventh of nine children. Harold spent his lifetime farming and ranching in Yuma County. He attended school through the eighth grade and attended radio and television repair vocational technical school.
Harold served in the Army during World War II with the United States Infantry Division and participated in the invasion of the Philippine Islands and New Guinea. He was honorably discharged in 1945 and returned to Yuma County to farm. Harold belonged to Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion.
On July 29, 1946 Harold was married to Jennie V. (Elder) Banaka in St. Francis, Kan. and they raised three daughters, Virginia, Nancy and Connie.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Jennie, who lives in Holyoke; daughters, Virginia Rasmussen, Nancy Hartman and Connie Murdie; sisters, Ethel Jones of Oregon and Marjorie Miner of Washington; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
The funeral service was held Oct. 18 at Baucke Funeral Chapel in Holyoke with Pastor Max Hines and Gary Hartman officiating.
Harold wished to be cremated following his services and have his ashes scattered on the family farm.
Baucke Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
