Mildred Thayer - December 04, 2010

Mildred Yvonne Rogers Thayer, 98, of Silver Spring, Md. was born in Salina, Kan. on Aug. 20, 1912 to Ewlita and Alma Holm Rogers. She died Dec. 4, 2010 after a short illness.

For most of her childhood she lived in Thomas County, Kan., graduating from Rexford High School in 1930.

Having received a diploma in nursing from St. Luke’s Hospital Nursing Program in Denver in 1934, she became a registered nurse, specializing in private duty nursing.

She married Joseph Hugh Thayer in Raton, N.M. on June 10, 1940. He died in September 1984. After World War II, while continuing in nursing, she ran a small chicken farm in Wheatridge with her husband.

They moved to Broomfield in 1953 where they established Thayer’s Farm, later Thayer-O’Kane Farm, which was relocated to Holyoke in 1982. At that time, she moved to Holyoke.

In 1990, she moved to Silver Spring, Md. where she lived with her daughter, Kathleen Foley, and assisted with Foley’s Follies Child Care until 1995 when the business closed.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son-in-law, James Levitt; sisters, Ruby Savage, Helen Holman and Pauline Johnson; and two brothers, Stanley Rogers and John Rogers.

She is survived by her children, Victoria Levitt of Potsdam, N.Y., Richard Thayer and wife Annette Ogle of Centennial, Michael Thayer and wife Leota Carton of Sterling, and Kathleen Foley and husband Jeffrey of Silver Spring; grandchildren, Donna Thayer Knight and husband Kameron, Eric Thayer, Tammy Thayer Evans and husband Brad, Ethan Levitt and wife Meggan Murphy, Kelly Thayer, Joseph Foley and wife April Roate, Elissa Levitt, Beth Foley, Brian Foley, Brendan Foley, Ashley Foley and John Foley; great-grandchildren, Taylor Knight, Taryn Knight, Gregory Evans, Zachary Evans, Margaret Levitt and Caroline Levitt; several nieces and nephews; and her sister-in-law, Eleanor Mumm Rogers.

Services were held at Gerk Funeral Home in Holyoke on Dec. 13 with burial in Holyoke Cemetery.
