Edward Race - January 02, 2011


Edward R. Race, 93, of Belle Fourche, S.D., formerly of Holyoke, was born Dec. 17, 1917 in Giltner, Neb., the son of William R. and Laura Belle (Sidders) Race. He died Jan. 2, 2011 in Belle Fourche. 

When Edward was a baby, the Race family moved from Giltner to south of Ovid in 1918. 

He married Viona M. Fisbeck Oct. 17, 1937 and the two were married almost 60 years until Viona’s death in July of 1997. Edward and Viona bought their own farm south of the Race home place. Ed and Viona moved to Holyoke in 1969. 

In 2007 he became a resident of Regent Park Carriage House until October 2010 when his family moved him to Belle Fourche Senior Care Facility.  

Edward was a farmer and mechanic all his life. He was a member of the Farm Bureau and school board for many years. He enjoyed building gadgets of all sorts.

Edward was preceded in death by his father, William Race; mother, Laura Race; wife, Viona Race; and brother, Runyan Race.

Edward is survived by his son, Roger Race of Bartlett, Neb.; son, Ray Race of Dayton, Wyo.; daughter, Sharon Jorges of Sturgis, S.D.; sister, Elizabeth Sowokinos of Columbus, Neb.; five grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. 

Funeral services were held Jan. 8 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Julesburg with Pastor Trent Christensen officiating. Burial followed in Ovid Cemetery.
