LaVerne Gibbs - January 12, 2011
LaVerne Everett Gibbs was born June 21, 1924 to Everett and Minnie (Becker) Gibbs in Fleming. He died Jan. 12, 2011 at Devonshire Acres in Sterling.
He attended Rockland Grade School and graduated from Dailey High School. He married Mae Ola Cunningham on Sept. 8, 1946 at the home of her parents southeast of Haxtun. To this union three children were born: Gary, Sharon and Debbie. Mae Ola died Jan. 12, 1992.
LaVerne farmed south of Haxtun until 1979 when he and his wife moved to a country home in Holyoke. After he retired, he delivered cars for Baldwin Chevrolet for several years. LaVern moved into Holyoke after Mae Ola died.
LaVerne served in the United States Marine Corps from 1944 until 1946. He served as a corporal in the First Separation Company MCB.
He was a very active member of Holyoke VFW and American Legion. He served as commander of both Haxtun and Holyoke American Legion and commander of Holyoke VFW. He was District Commander of American Legion. He was a member of United Methodist Church.
He loved to square dance and travel and spent many hours in his garage doing woodwork. In his younger days, he loved to bowl.
LaVerne was preceded in death by his parents, Everett and Minnie Gibbs; wife, Mae Ola Gibbs; son, Gary Gibbs; and brother, Glenn Gibbs.
He is survived by his daughters, Sharon Kissack and husband Dennis of Frenchtown, Mont. and Debbie Unrein and husband Jay of Sterling; daughter-in-law, Lauri Gibbs of Colorado Springs; brother, Howard Gibbs of Haxtun; sisters, Delores Merrill of Oklahoma City, Okla., Donna Schultz of Las Lunas, N.M., Marlys Kain of Haxtun and Janice Gibbs of Atwater, Calif.; five grandsons; three great-grandsons; and four great-granddaughters.
The funeral service was held Jan. 19 at Baucke Funeral Chapel in Holyoke. Interment followed at Holyoke Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to American Legion Post 90 for Boys State.
