Marynell Spears - July 11, 2011

Former Holyoke resident Marynell Spears, 61, died Monday, July 11, 2011 at Pikes Peak Hospice in Colorado Springs.

Marynell was born in Amherst, Texas to LD and MaryBeth (Walden) Spears Feb. 20, 1950.

She spent her early years in Littlefield, Texas, and when she was 5, the family moved to LaMesa, Calif. She attended school there and graduated in June, 1968 from Mount Migel High School.

Marynell worked as a CNA until she married Don Paul Smith II in June 1970. They moved quite often the first years of marriage because Don was enlisted in the Army.

Their daughter Pam was born in March of 1971 in Kansas City, Mo. Their son LeRoy Alexander joined the family in October of 1972 in Pueblo. They settled in Pueblo eventually. While Don attended college, Marynell cared for their young family. Marynell later returned to the nursing world as a CNA at Parkview Hospital.

In May of 1994, Marynell and her son LeRoy moved from Pueblo to Sterling. Her first grandchild had arrived and she wanted to be closer so she could enjoy her.

Marynell enjoyed singing in the choir at Christ United Methodist Church.

As she fought many health problems, Marynell and LeRoy moved to Holyoke to be closer to her daughter Pam and her family. She attended First Christian Church in Holyoke.

Marynell enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, reading and her cats. She was a very accomplished seamstress as she had made her daughter’s wedding dress and all the bridesmaid dresses as well.

In December, 2010, she and LeRoy moved back to Pueblo as she had always considered that home. Her health continued to decline, so LeRoy again moved them to Colorado Springs, hoping to find answers to her declining health.

Marynell is preceded in death by her parents and grandson, Westyn Struckmeyer.

Surviving her are her son, LeRoy Smith of Holyoke; daughter, Pam Struckmeyer and husband Damon and their family of Holyoke; brother, Dan Spears and wife Beverly of Fairbanks, Alaska; and sister, Joyce Miller and husband Wayne of Medesto, Calif.

There was no visitation as cremation was chosen.

A memorial service was held Aug. 17, 2011 at First Christian Church in Holyoke.
Final resting place is in the arms of her loving family.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Marynell Spears Memorial Fund, c/o Gerk Funeral Home, P.O. Box 201, Holyoke, CO 80734.
