LeRoy Smith - September 11, 2011

LeRoy Alexander Smith, age 38, of Holyoke, was born to Don Smith II and Marynell Spears October 4, 1972 in Pueblo. He died unexpectedly at his home Sept. 11, 2011 in Holyoke.

He attended South Mesa Elementary and Vineland Middle School and graduated from Pueblo County High School in 1991. He attended Pueblo Community College and completed a two-year program in food service.

In May 1994, he moved with his mother to Sterling. While there, he attended Christ United Methodist Church. He took great pride and enjoyment in ushering, helping with dinners, Cocoa with Santa and Bible school. In 2008 he received the Quiet Disciple Award.

In February of 2008, he moved to Holyoke. He made a new group of friends that he loved and treasured. He joined the Lions Club and loved being known as the “Popcorn Man” and being the Lion mascot in the parades. He popped popcorn and served it at Bingo and the ball park. In a very short time, he was known and recognized all over town. He also became a member of First Christian Church of Holyoke.

In December 2010, he moved back to Pueblo to continue caring for his mother Marynell. They were only there about six months before they moved to Colorado Springs. Marynell’s declining health continued to worsen and she died a short time later.

LeRoy felt alone in the big city. With the help of many friends, he was able to move back to Sterling. He was amazing in the fact that he drove a 26’ U-haul truck from Colorado Springs to Sterling. After arriving, he still was unsettled. He was too far away to walk in the downtown area.

He was able to secure an apartment in Holyoke and was ecstatic to be “coming home.” He had to wait to get into the apartment, and during the wait he spent three amazing weeks with his friend Randy Hoch.

LeRoy enjoyed a variety of activities, crocheting pot holders, cooking, decorating cakes, Bible study, volunteering for the Lions and church and spending time with Angel, his poodle.

LeRoy is preceded in death by his mother, Marynell Spears; grandparents, L.D. and MaryBeth Spears; great-grandparents, Lucy Walden and Will and Lillie Bell Cunningham; and nephew, Westyn Struckmeyer.

He is survived by his father, Don Smith II and wife Linda of Medford, Ore.; sister, Pam Struckmeyer and husband Damon; grandparents, Don and Lois Smith of Austin; niece Mariah and nephews Sidney and Baylor of Holyoke; his good friends, Randy Hoch of Holyoke, Vicky and Mike Brunelle of Sterling and Vi Winter of Sterling; and his poodle, Angel.

There was no visitation for LeRoy, as cremation was chosen.

The memorial service was held Sept. 26 at First Christian Church of Holyoke, with Pastor Merle Powell officiating.

Final resting place is in the arms of his loving family.

Gerk Funeral Home was entrusted with the arrangements.
