Fern Salyards - September 25, 2011

Fern Wilhelmina (Papke) Salyards, age 85, of Haxtun, was born Nov. 6, 1925 in Firth, Neb. to Herman and Dorothea (Krueger) Papke. She died Sept. 25, 2011 in Greeley.

Visitation was scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 28, 9 a.m.-7 p.m. at Gerk Funeral Home in Haxtun.

The funeral service was scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 29 at 10:30 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Haxtun, with Pastor Dave Loeschke officiating. Interment was to be at Haxtun Cemetery.

She was baptized Nov. 29, 1925 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Firth and confirmed on April 4, 1939 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Haxtun.Fern was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church of Haxtun.

In April of 1931, she moved with her family to a farm 10 miles northwest of Holyoke. In 1938, her parents purchased a farm three miles northeast of Haxtun. She attended the Beachville School and the Haxtun schools. She graduated from Haxtun High with the Class of 1943.

After graduation, Fern went by train to Tacoma, Wash. where, on June 16, 1943, she became the bride of Elden Salyards. While Elden was overseas in the military, Fern returned to Haxtun where she worked in the Haxtun bank.

She then went to Cheyenne, Wyo. where Elden was stationed until his discharge on Oct. 31, 1945. After his discharge from the army, they made their home in Haxtun. They purchased their home site from Elden’s grandfather, William S. Salyards.

Fern and Elden had three children: Ralph Elden, Jeanette Ann and Wayne Lee.

Fern began working outside the home after their children began school. She worked for Minnie Cheney at the Do-Drop-Inn Café, the Haxtun Department for J.B. Hoadley and the Haxtun Community Bank until her retirement in 1991.

Fern and Elden enjoyed their many camping and fishing trips.

Preceding Fern in death were her husband of 60 years, Elden Salyards; parents, Herman and Dorothea Papke; sister, Wilma Stevens; brother, Raymond Papke; in-laws, Lloyd and Anne Salyards, Lester Seger, Luella Papke, Stanley Salyards, Mildred Salyards, Beulah Salyards, Katherine Salyards, Maxine Daniel, Ned Daniel, Everett Salyards and Betty Salyards; and nieces, Debra Starkebaum and Paulette Hendrickson.

Surviving her are her three children, Ralph Salyards of Haxtun, Jeanette Poos and husband Larry of Holyoke and Wayne Salyards and wife Dola of Holyoke; grandchildren, Julie Ferguson and husband Mark of Imperial, Neb., Sheri Bussell of Imperial, Debby Phinney and husband Justin of Gill, Mendi Lutze and husband Mark of Holyoke, Luke Salyards of Steamboat Springs and Becky Denbo and husband Dan of Valentine, Neb.; eight great-grandaughters and one great-grandson; sisters, Arlene Harms and husband Harry of Fleming and Lola Mae Funke and husband Eilliam of Fort Collins; brothers-in-law, Kenneth Salyards and wife Lily, Melvin Salyards and wife Roberta and Jack Salyards and wife Shirley, all of Haxtun; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
