Melvin Moon - April 22, 2012
Thomas Melvin Moon was born May 28, 1918 to Thomas E. and Ora E. Moon on the family homestead south of Holyoke. He died and went to be with the Lord April 22, 2012.
Melvin was the eldest of six children: Melvin, Phillip, Fern, Velma, Wesley and an infant daughter lost at birth.
Melvin attended eight years of school at the Hill Top School located two miles north and a half mile east of the homestead. He either rode his horse or drove the horse and homemade cart to school.
Melvin lived on the family homestead his entire life. He farmed and raised cattle.
Horses were always an important part of his life. He broke many horses to ride. He was still riding horses at age 80.
Melvin found pleasure riding in the Phillips County Fair parade for 64 years. In 1981 he was honored to be named the Grand Marshall of the Phillips County Fair parade.
Melvin was a loyal friend and neighbor. He always made time and enjoyed helping others.
In 2010 Melvin moved into Regent Park Nursing Home and was a resident there at the time of his death. He enjoyed his last years there walking resident dogs, visiting with friends and playing bingo.
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Phillip and Wesley Moon; sister, Fern Miner; infant sister; brothers-in-law, Floyd Garretson and George Miner; and nephew, Tom Garretson.
He is survived by his sister, Velma Garretson of Haxtun, and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service was held April 27 at Gerk Funeral Home in Holyoke. Interment followed at the Holyoke Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Fairfield Covenant Church or Phillips County Fair Parade Horse Division.
