Audrey Reim - May 11, 2012

Audrey Reim died May 11, 2012 at Regent Park Nursing Home in Holyoke. She was 87. Audrey Margaret Jacobson was born Jan. 3, 1925 at home near Velva, N.D. to Gustave and Josephine (Pederson) Jacobson, the eighth of nine children. Within the year, they moved to Wannaska, Minn., where she grew up on the family farm and attended the Torfin country school through eighth grade.

As a teen, Audrey worked a variety of jobs, including picking potatoes and mustard and helping with child care and household duties at her sisters’ homes and neighboring farms. As a young adult, she worked in a bakery and attended Bible School in Thief River Falls. She also spent a few summers teaching Vacation Bible Schools in area country churches as a volunteer for the Baptist Sunday School Union.

As a young woman, Audrey traveled to California, spending time with her Aunt Nelsine and working as a nanny. She eventually moved to Polson, Mont., where she helped her sister with child care and eventually bought a house in Polson.

After a bout with rheumatic fever, Audrey returned to Roseau, Minn. She worked at the Roseau Hospital as a nurse’s assistant and as a waitress at Nelson’s Cafe, where she met Harold Reim, who was part of the regular lunch crowd. They were married at Bethlehem Lutheran Church near Wannaska on July 20, 1958.

During their marriage they raised three children—Kristine, Kathryn and Kent—and operated dairy farms in Minnesota and Colorado, with the majority of those years spent in Kersey, Cañon City and Holyoke.

While busy with family life, Audrey completed her GED, enjoyed working part time at the local hospital and helped Harold with the dairy when she was able. She also managed a huge garden, canning huge amounts of produce and passing those interests on to her children. Before her fingers became too arthritic, she loved creating beautiful baby blankets with crocheted edgings for her grandchildren and others.

Audrey will be remembered for her love of all children, her unselfish sharing of whatever she had and her Norwegian spirit of hospitality. She was a woman of quiet, yet true, faith who loved music and books. Though she lived in pain for much of her adult life, her tenacity and will to keep moving taught life lessons to all around her.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Joseph, Edward, Martin and Albin Jacobson; and sisters, Linda Barnett, Geda Jacobson and Ina Sandland.

She is survived by her husband, Harold Reim of Holyoke; daughters, Kristine LaBorde and husband Doug of Pierz, Minn. and Kathryn Reeves and husband Greg of Rapid City, S.D.; son, Kent Reim of Greeley; grandchildren, Daniel and Joseph LaBorde and Emily and Amanda Reeves; and sister, Ruth Njaa, and sister-in-law, Rose Jacobson, both of Roseau, Minn.

A memorial celebration of Audrey’s life will be held in June in Roseau, with date and location to be determined. Interment will take place at Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery in rural Wannaska.

Condolences may be sent to the family c/o Harold Reim, 1301 E. Johnson St. #15A, Holyoke, CO 80734.
