Vera Lahnert - September 10, 2012
Vera Ann Woodhams Draper Lahnert of Holyoke died Sept. 10, 2012 in Holyoke. Vera was born into this world on May 22, 1945 to her parents, Everett and Florence (Eschliman) Woodhams in Julesburg. She later had two brothers, Leon and Bruce, join her at the family farm located south of Ovid.
Vera spent her younger years riding horses and working around the farm and an occasional trip to town for a movie or dance.
Vera attended her first two years in a country school just a mile west of her house. She continued her education as an Ovid Red Devil and a high school cheerleader.
Shortly after graduation, she married Norman Lee Draper from Imperial, Neb. and added four children to their life: Becky, Karlan, Christy and Mickel. They resided in Ogallala, Neb. for a short time before moving to Ovid, where they raised their children.
Most of Vera’s’ life was spent being an awesome mother. She loved being outside around her animals, playing Annie Annie Over with her kids or reading her pocket books which she and her friends swapped back and forth.
When the kids were a little older, she worked at Highline Electric and the GW Sugar factory. Later on, she worked at the Husky Truck Stop and The Cage as a waitress. She loved to make people laugh and had a great sense of humor, and she took pride in that. Those who knew her almost always joined in her laughter.
Vera and Lee went their separate ways, and Vera was blessed to find Jerry Lahnert from Amherst, to whom she had been married for the last 20 years. They loved to go gambling and chasing grandkids. Vera spent her summers working in her yard and refinishing steamer trunks. Winter was spent putting together puzzles, crocheting or playing on her computer. Vera had a love for antiques and family history, which she and many friends and relatives had been working on.
Vera had some limitations with her health, but that never stopped her from her once-a-month card playing with her lady friends. She always had a great time with the girls.
Vera was preceded in death by her father, Everett; mother, Florence; and son, Mickel.
She is survived by her husband, Jerry Lahnert; daughter, Becky and husband Mark and their kids Kort, Weston and Shayln; son, Karlan and wife Karen and their kids Shane, Cole, Audrey and Grant; daughter, Christy and fiancé Sherman and their kids Spencer, Dylan and Brenden; brother, Leon and wife Rosi and their kids Shannon, Karla and Stacy and families; brother, Bruce; and Troy, Julie and Ethan Kotch.
The funeral service was held Sept. 15 at Ovid Methodist Church with Pastor Kerry Johnson officiating. Interment followed at the Ovid Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Melissa Memorial Hospital or Regent Park Nursing and Rehab.
Gerk Funeral Home was entrusted with the arrangements.
