Deane Anderson - October 22, 2012
James Deane Anderson, age 87, of Holyoke, died Oct. 22, 2012 in Holyoke. Deane was born July 4, 1925 to Ralph and Hazel (Ferrell) Anderson in Holyoke.
Deane enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age of 17. He was stationed in the European Theater and served in World War II and the Korean conflict. He proudly graduated with the Class of 2003 under Operation Recognition for veterans who enlisted before they were able to graduate from high school.
After his discharge from the Navy, he became a carrier for the Holyoke Post Office until he began working in the family Gambles store in Holyoke. He purchased the store from his father and managed it until his retirement in 1991. After his retirement, he became a representative for Waddell & Reed financial services.
On Sept. 4, 1960, he was united in marriage to Bijie Ann Wernet in Holyoke. To this union, they had five children: Diana Crystal, Roxann Enabnit, Diana Enabnit, Shirley Anderson and Elisa Wilson.
Deane was a member of First Christian Church in Holyoke and served as a deacon for many years and was a VFW post commander. His hobbies included ham radio and gardening.
Preceding him in death were his parents; two brothers and two sisters; daughter, Shirley; and grandson, Christopher Wilson.
He is survived by his wife, Bijie Anderson; children, Diana Lee Crystal of Scottsbluff, Neb., Roxann and Merlin Enabnit of Toronto, Kan., Diana Lynn and Melvin Enabnit of Great Bend, Kan. and Elisa and Jim Wilson of Williams, Ariz.; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one sister, Marjorie Black of Ames, Iowa; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
The funeral service was held Oct. 25 at First Christian Church with Pastor Merle Powell officiating.
