Evelyn Keasling - December 31, 2012
Evelyn Keasling was born May 6, 1914, along with twin Eloine, to Delbert and Olga Nelson Hiatt in Harvard, Neb. She died Dec. 31, 2012 in Holyoke.
She grew up on a farm near Harvard and attended Harvard High School, graduating in 1931. She attended Kearney State Teachers College for one year. She taught in the Clay County schools for four years.
She married Clinton Keasling on Nov. 3, 1935, 34 years after her parents were married in the same house. After living in Nebraska, Idaho and Oregon, the family moved to a farm in the Holyoke area in 1950. She was named the county homemaker of the year in 1954.
She belonged to various organizations: Eureka Club, PEO, Eastern Star, PTA and AARP, to name a few. She was the activities director for Sheridan Manor for seven years and executive director for SunSet View. She was active in the Holyoke First Christian Church for many years. She was a teacher, pianist and organist at the church.
After the death of her husband in 2003, she moved to assisted living then moved into the nursing home. Her first roommate was her sister, Eloine. They were together again after many years. Eloine died in 2010. Evelyn’s son Douglas died in October 2010.
She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Beth and family; son, Dennis and wife Kathy and family; and many other family members.
The funeral service will be held Monday, Jan. 7 at 1:30 p.m. at the First Christian Church with Pastor Merle Powell officiating. Interment will be at the Holyoke Cemetery.
Donations in her memory can be made to Youth Challenge or the “Read to My Baby” program which she established in 2006 at the Heginbothan Library.
