Irma Sprague - May 25, 2009

Irma graduated from Phillips County High School in 1934 at the age of 17. After graduation, she continued her education in Chillicothe, Mo., completing two years at the Chillicothe Business College.
On April 4, 1936, Irma was united in marriage with Eugene Wayland Sprague in Denver. God blessed Irma and Wayland’s union with three children: Dennis Eugene, Joy Leah and Russell Wayland.
Irma and Wayland spent the first few years of their life together in Denver, where Irma worked at Montgomery Ward. She loved living in Denver, but the farm tugged at Wayland’s heart, and the two moved back to Holyoke in 1939 to farm with the Sprague family.
After returning to Holyoke, Irma worked at the Phillips County Courthouse, with the IRS in Denver and was most known as the secretary at Holyoke High School, where she worked until her retirement.
Irma grew up in the Presbyterian Church in Holyoke, and transferred to the United Methodist Church. She was very active with the United Methodist Women’s group, and was recognized in 2009 as a 50-year member of the church. Irma was also active in the Holyoke community, where she helped start the Holyoke Arts Council and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Irma loved to paint, play bridge, do crossword puzzles and spend time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whom she adored. In her later years, Irma loved going to lunch with her friend, Lela Carruthers. She lived with a deep-rooted optimism and an intense passion for life.
