Marie Bartlett - February 17, 2013


Longtime Burlington resident Ellen “Marie” Bartlett, age 77, died and left this earth to live in her heavenly home Feb. 17, 2013, in Burlington. Marie was born March 8, 1935, in Burlington to Jens Jensen and Lena (Blackburn) Jensen.

She attended schools in Burlington and Goodland, Kan., and went on to acquire her GED. She was united in marriage to James “Jim” Kay Bartlett Jr. on March 8, 1950 at his parents’ family farm in Ruleton, Kan. To this union, they were blessed with six children: Gwenn, Joyce, Lynn, Christian, Pamela and Kaye.

She worked through the years as a mother, homemaker and farmwife, including milking and delivering fresh cream to the creamery and 50 dozen eggs a week to a restaurant in Goodland. She also drove tractor and grain trucks and hauled meals to the field daily from planting time through harvest, all while caring for her children and home.

She was an active member of the Methodist church in Kanorado, Kan., for many years before moving to Burlington. Marie enjoyed being a 4-H leader for various projects in the Grant Boosters 4-H Club. She was also involved in the Home Extension Club, contributing to various community projects.

After moving to Burlington in 1968, Marie did maid service at a local motel and kept up the ladies’ lounge. She obtained full-time employment at Sav-U supermarket for a number of years before becoming a city office employee, being promoted to deputy city clerk. She, as well as her father, faithfully served the city for over 25 years. After retiring from the city, she enjoyed her quilting, sewing and machine embroidery up until her failing health prevented her from doing it any longer.

Marie was baptized on March 8, 1981 and remained an active member of the Burlington Christian Church.

Marie was preceded in death by her husband, James K. Bartlett Jr.; daughter, Kaye Ellen Williams; son, Chris Bartlett; parents, Jens C. Jensen and Lena (Blackburn) Jensen Schaffer; brothers, Bob and Kenneth Jensen; father- and mother-in-law, James Kay Bartlett Sr. and Ruth (Asher) Bartlett; sisters-in-laws, Janice Lee Wegner and Donna King; nephew, Michael Wegner; and son-in-law, Don Luther.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Gwenn Kleweno of Burlington, Joyce and husband Dennis Weaver of Holyoke, Lynn Bartlett of Burlington and Pamela Luther of Greeley; grandchildren, Jessica and husband Michael Wolf of Kanorado, Kan., Ginger Kleweno of Norfolk, Va., Laura Lee and husband Jeff Richards of Idalia, RJ and wife Abby Kleweno of Manor, Texas, Tracy and husband Jerry Steggs of Holyoke, Mindy and husband Brad Richards of Idalia, T.J. and wife Shelia Weaver of Tribune, Kan., Rebecca Weaver of Holyoke, Heather Finley of Peyton, Joshua and wife Chastity Finley of Weldona, Karen Baca of Greeley and Jerimy and wife Sarrah Williams of Brunswick, Maine; and great-grandchildren, Ethan, Emily, Ella Wolf, Bryce and Bently Richards, Braxton Kleweno, J.C., Parker, Reese and Bo Steggs, Tyson, Trey and Tanner Richards, Elissa Giles, Kianna, Christa and Cole Sandoval, Hayden Houser and Logan, Mikayla and AlixiaKaye Williams.

Marie will be greatly missed by her family and many special friends.

Memorials may be made in her name to the Burlington Christian Church and may be left at or sent to Equitable Savings and Loan Bank in Burlington.

Funeral services for Marie were held Feb. 23, 2013 at the Burlington Christian Church with Pastor David Williams officiating. Burial followed at the Fairview Cemetery in Burlington.
